Zombies, Run! Spring 2019 Virtual Race

I was low on sleep but this afternoon I decided to run the Spring 2019 Virtual Race from Zombies, Run! I wasn't at my peak because I have a 3-day-old baby and all that entails and haven't been running in the week leading up to her birth, but I was happy with my pace considering the situation.

Bringing Celestine Home

Labour took a long while, but we were fortunate generally with Celestine's birth. Since there were few complications, we were able to bring her home for Monday night. She took some time to get comfortable, but seems to have taken to the space well.

Celestine Emerald

Saturday night Celestine Emerald was born healthy and adorable. We were tired but thrilled to meet our baby.

Waiting Out the Storm

A storm carrying thunder and lightning rolled in this morning as we waited for the baby to arrive. It has been tough on Tonet to not be making much progress after more than a day at the IWK. At least the crashes, flashes and downpour provided small distractions.

Hospital Wait

Early this morning Tonet and I headed to the IWK, the local hospital for children, youth and women. Our baby is taking time arriving, so we spent the morning climbing stairs in the stairwell and doing what we could to help encourage the process.

I spotted some lovely art pieces around the hospital, and especially enjoyed the birds scattered around.

As I'm writing, we're still wait

Pairs

Pairs is a simple deck of cards that can be used to play dozens of games, including the basic game of Pairs. Cards are numbered 1-10 and each card is present in the deck that same number of times (1x1, 5x5, 10x10). What makes it really wonderful is a wide range of versions of the deck featuring beautiful art.

Super Mario Land DX

The ROM hacking hero toruzz has followed up the superb Super Mario Land 2 DX with Super Mario Land DX. This first Super Mario Land game wasn't one I loved as much as its sequel, but the fresh coat of paint makes it a lot more fun to play. Playing the game again this morning on a GBA using a flash card was a treat.

Gardening, Not Architecture – Saboteur

Last night Sarah Saturday of Gardening, Not Architecture, sent out a preview of a new single, "Absence of Me", in a newsletter. It's great.

Hearing the single sent me off to listen to the other G,NA tracks I hadn't played in a long while. After seeing her perform in Halifax years ago, I've enjoyed checking in with her great pop so

O Human Star

O Human Star has been one of the webcomics I read page by page as they come out for years. The current chapter has delivered poignant moments and laid bare the conflicts and character motivations that were driving the story. It's a truly wonderful comic and I'm surprised it hasn't gained a wider readership.

Game Boy Memories

The Game Boy wasn't the first gaming system I played when I was a kid; the NES, Commodore 64, Vic 20 and a few hand-me-downs came first. It was definitely the most formative and loved while I was growing up. It's been 30 years since it was first released and there are little celebrations happening across the internet.

Visiting Halifax’s Museum of Natural History

Today Tonet and I visited the Museum of Natural History here in Halifax. There were three exhibits I wanted to see before they end.

This Is What I Wish You Knew is a collection of contemporary Indigenous carvings on clay tiles that was stunning.
The tiles presented in this exhibit form part of a tile exposit

Pokemon World Tour

Pokémon World Tour is a fun podcast that explores the locations featured in the Pokémon games. They've covered Kanto and Sinnoh, and are now going through Hoenn. I'm playing through the Hoenn region in Pokémon Ruby now, so it has been especially interesting to hear their take on spots I've recently played through.

Star Soldier

Star Soldier for the NES was one of the first space shooters I played when I was a kid.  I remember it being a flea market find I was thrilled with. It was super tough, but the music, atmosphere and advancement mechanics kept me coming back.

The game is available through Nintendo Switch Online and it's much enhanced by the ability to use save states to

Run 2019.04.16

Halifax is a fairly hilly city, and I've tended to run along the flatter, straighter portions of it when running in the winter. Now I'm back to running up a hill to start my runs when I leave work, and it is slowing me down for now.

Some Murals From Dartmouth

After my run on Saturday I snapped some photos of some of the weird and delightful murals along the Dartmouth waterfront.

Run 2019.04.13

This morning I ran the first training mission for the next Zombies, Run! virtual race, Train to Oban. I have a strong appreciation of trains, so it's fun to have missions involving them.
