Luna oi! on Rice

In this video Luna oi! explains rice. She shows how it is bought in Vietnam, to how to cook rice, and how to make rice balls with a peanut dip. If you don't know the right way to wash rice, or how to measure water, it's a good primer. In my home we eat rice almost every day, so it's second nature for me now, but I had missteps before and instructions like these would have helped.

Dinner at Envie

Tonet and I had dinner Sunday at Envie, one of the vegan restaurants here in Halifax. It's on the higher end of what I'm willing to spend when eating out, but the food is stellar. The matcha latte, king wings (oyster mushroom cutlets), cheezeburger (seitan patty), chickpea and vegetable soup and cheezecake (with dulce de leche) were all delicious.

Ruby Ibarra – Playbill$

Ruby Ibarra performed "Playbill$" accompanied by The Balikbayans on the Wish 107.5 Bus, and this rendition brought new life to the album track.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

I was late to seeing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse because I was traveling while it was in theatres, but even after hearing so many glowing reviews of it, it still exceeded my expectations when I watched it today. The characters were perfectly translated from comic to film, the visuals were inventive, and the soundtrack was impressive.

This was a great

Golden Age Society – Big Fam

It took some time for me to warm up to Golden Age Society, but their Beatrock debut EP Epidemic is strong. "Big Fam" is a standout track.

Nintendo Cartridge Society on Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins

This week Nintendo Cartridge Society covered Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, a game I loved growing up. This game was a weird one, and the hosts dive into what sets it apart from other Mario games. They also mention the wonderful Super Mario Land 2 DX.

Every Little Thing on Forks

This week's episode of Every Little Thing, "Forks: One Utensil’s Battle for Respect", is a quick, engaging history of forks. Many folks living in cultures dominated by European traditions don't get how abnormal the use of forks really is, but they were viewed as elitist, demonic and undemocratic for centuries. This episode is a good overview of the strange story of this weird utensil.

GBA Recasing

I've had a mini project ongoing for the past couple months of refurbishing a pair of Nintendo Game Boy Advance systems. I bought both used and they had scuffs and other signs of damage that were purely cosmetic, so I decided to buy some cheap replacement housings for the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP and make them look new. I followed videos for each and it

Eisley – “Save My Soul”

Eisley's "Save My Soul" is a song that keeps getting stuck in my head. I love hearing even the imperfect busking version the band recorded with globetrekpro.

Sucré – “Roof” & “Walk Through”

Sucré's new video looks like it repurposes a stop motion fairy tale and it's a perfect fit for Stacy King's haunting vocals and the moving instrumentation.

Two Crows

Many mornings as I walk to work I am flanked by two crows who fly ahead of me on either side of one street. I worried I'd done something to annoy them, so I took to leaving them bits of food as I passed. We're not quite friends, but perhaps we have a peace.

Ian Penn – Death of a Traveller

Ian Penn is a singer and poet that pulls on some of the threads that Leonard Cohen and Neil Young did. His new song, "Death of a Traveller", is a beautiful, tender piece.

Run with the Ancestors

Today I ran the Run with the Ancestors virtual race.  It was good to get out for a winter run after avoiding the sidewalks because of ice. I still slipped some, but it was overall a strong run. The virtual race was overall well done, but some of the phrasing in the narration seemed glaringly out of touch and colored by a colonial view.

Six Feats Under – Mouse Guard

Six Feats Under's Mouse Guard podcast is a joy to listen to. It uses the Mouse Guard RPG system and David Peterson's wonderful Mouse Guard comics world to tell emotional and entertaining stories. The players and game master bring characters and the world to life masterfully.

There is one story arc available as Year 1 and Year 2 is ongoing. The po

I want to open seizemeans.com to other folks, but want to have a solid Code of Conduct before I do that. Are there good templates for that to look at for a broadly left (communists, socialists and anarchists, et al) instance? An example of the kind of clarity I like is kitty.town/about/more .

Wheels of Aurelia

Wheels of Aurelia is a surprising game that combines third person driving and narrative to great effect. It's a game that can be played through in under half an hour, but it offers new opportunities to alter the story with each play through. I enjoyed the simple controls, wonderfully stylized visuals and the engaging characters as I wound down the roads. Having the details of Communis

The Cybertronic Spree – Immigrant Song

The Cybertronic Spree are more than just a band that performs as Transformers; they're excellent musicians and have discerning taste in fun songs to cover when not creating solid original songs. This cover of "Immigrant Song" is a great introduction to what they can do.
